Pulapre Balakrishnan

Pulapre Balakrishnan is an applied economist specializing in macroeconomics and development. Educated in Moscow, Madras, and New Delhi, he trained as an economist at Oxford and Cambridge. He has held academic positions at Oxford University, the Indian Statistical Institute, IIM Kozhikode, and Ashoka University, and has worked with institutions like the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, the Reserve Bank of India, and the United Nations Development Program. Currently, he is Honorary Visiting Professor at the Centre for Development Studies and Visiting Professor at Krea University (2024–25). A prominent voice in India’s economic discourse for over three decades, he has published widely, including the books Pricing and Inflation in India (1991), Economic Growth in India (2010), and India’s Economy from Nehru to Modi (2022).
