After her husband, Pierre, died, Marie Curie had a romantic relationship with Paul Langevin, one of his pupils. This caused a scandal, because Langevin was married. When Curie was to receive her second Nobel Prize in 1911, critics suggested that she shouldn’t accept it in person. Two weeks before the ceremony, Albert Einstein sent Curie a letter advising her to ignore the critics’ “hogwash.” She accepted the Nobel Prize in person.
