Lapu-Lapu, city, northwestern Mactan Island, Philippines. It is located on a narrow channel of the Bohol Strait opposite Cebu City. Formerly called Opon, the city was renamed in honour of Chief Lapulapu, who, on April 27, 1521, killed the Portuguese navigator and explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The chief is considered a national hero. A coconut-growing and fishing centre, it has an international airport nearby and excellent port facilities, including petroleum installations.
