Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was one of the greatest scientific minds of the 18th century, helping devise the metric system and discovering oxygen’s role in combustion. During France’s Reign of Terror, however, he was viewed as a member of the old regime. He was charged with selling adulterated tobacco and executed by guillotine.
