Anna Jarvis was inspired by her mother, Ann Jarvis, to create Mother’s Day. Before her death in 1905, Ann Jarvis organized various women’s groups to promote friendship and health. Anna Jarvis once heard her mother say, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.” Looking to fulfill her mother’s dream, Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day church service, in 1908. The day was made a national holiday in 1914.
