In her later years, Anna Jarvis sought to end the commercialization of Mother’s Day, which she believed was supposed to be a “personal day.” She also railed against those who linked the holiday to charity events or otherwise distorted its true intent. Jarvis eventually sought to legally cancel Mother’s Day. Her campaign left her virtually penniless. In 1943 Jarvis was placed in a sanitarium, and she died there five years later.
